Obituary for Santa Rizzuto (Simone)

On Tuesday, May 5, 2020, Santa (Simone) Rizzuto, a long-time resident of Westerly, loving wife and mother of three children, peacefully passed away at the age of 88 at the Westerly Health Center.

Santa was born in Acri, Cosenza, Italy to the parents of the late Gennaro Simone and Cristina Fusaro. She met and married Salvatore Rizzuto in June of 1955, and they were married for over 64 years. They created three children and later moved to Westerly, Rhode Island in 1970 to seek a better life for their family.

During her life, Santa was a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, friend and devout Catholic member of the Immaculate Conception Church. She worked full-time at Guild Music Corp. while especially taking care of her family. She made many great sacrifices in order for her children to have a better life. She enjoyed cooking for her family, making soupy, gardening, sowing and knitting.

Santa’s three children —Elio Rizzuto, Max Rizzuto, and Maurice Rizzuto — were her pride and joy. She loved them dearly. Their well-being was always on her mind and a top priority. She tirelessly tried to care for them. Her three sons will dearly miss her and her very compassionate, caring and loving nature. She truly was a great mom.

Those who knew Santa would say she was a very respectful, polite, and a genuinely warm-hearted person. She was family oriented, hard-working, and loyal. Her absence will be missed by her children, relatives, and friends, but her memory will endure within our hearts and minds forever.

She is survived by her three sons, daughter-in-law Mariolina (Vaccaro) Rizzuto of Westerly, her grandson, Dr. Salvatore Rizzuto of Westerly, and her sister, Giorgina (Simone) Gabriele of Temecula.

She is predeceased by her six siblings, Angelo Simone of France, Rosa (Simone) Murano of Italy, Rosaria (Simone) Algieri of New Jersey, Immacolata Cipriano of France, Mariano Simone of New Jersey, and Maria (Simone) Turano of Italy.

We would like to thank all the healthcare providers at the Westerly Health Center who cared for Santa over the past several years. To the doctors and nurses who helped comfort her in her final moments, your care, compassion and generosity is much appreciated!

The world became much better that she was born and by her great contributions. Let us honor and celebrate her life forever!

Funeral services will be held privately. There will be a memorial service at a later date. Santa will be entombed at Saint Sebastian Cemetery in Westerly, RI.
