Obituary for Ernesto Mendonca Jr.

Ernesto Mendonca, Jr., 64, of N. Main Street, Stonington, passed away at The Westerly Hospital on Wednesday, April 21, 2021 at the age of 64.

Born in Sao Miguel, Portugal, he was the son of the late Ernesto, Sr. and Ines Mendonca.

Ernesto worked as a carpenter for Electric Boat in Groton for 45 years. He was a graduate of Stonington High School Class of ’75 where he exceled in basketball and soccer, achieving All-Conference in both. He also played baseball as a senior. Ernesto was a faithful communicant of St. Mary’s Church.

He is survived by five siblings, Joseph M. Mendonca and M. Fatima Pinto and husband Jorge, all of Pawcatuck, Mario Jorge Mendonca of Stonington, Mary D. Swiencki and husband Kevin of Glocester, and Gilda M. Mendonca of Westerly; as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and a great-great-nephew. Ernesto was predeceased by his sister Angelina M. Mansfield.

Visiting hours will be Sunday, April 25, from 2-4pm at Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce St., Westerly. Attendees will be required to follow guidelines for wearing masks, social distancing and capacity limitations of the funeral home, imposed by the Dept. of Health.
A Funeral Liturgy will take place at St. Mary’s Church, 95 Main St., Stonington at 10am on Monday, April 26. There is no procession to church from the funeral home. Burial will follow at River Bend Cemetery, Westerly.
